The holidays aren't always the best time of year for some people.

It's a season of physical, emotional, and spiritual darkness.

Depression and suicide are at a higher rate

during this time as well.

I've known a couple of people who have taken their own lives... one recently, a friend of our son's. He was just a kid, 23, and we hadn't seen him around for awhile as his life was consumed with alcohol, drugs, and hanging with the wrong people. I am filled with grief over this as I remember when he and his brother would hang out with our boys, ride bikes, hike through the woods, and gosh were these guys always hungry! There was always some kind of snack or fresh baked treat for all these guys. He was baptized right along side our boys a few years ago too....so how does one go from the top - with God - to where this child ended up?

I ask myself... what in the world can be so bad for you to take your own life! I mean, there's no going back from this! We've all been in dark places at one time or another in our lives. I know I've hit rock bottom years ago and honestly, wondered why I was even here, what was the point. I didn't have the Lord in my life at that time. Maybe that's why I like the movie classic, It's a Wonderful Life with Jimmy Stewart. We never know how we affect others as we go through life, but we are not here by accident!

God Loves!

God is reaching out His mighty hand for you!

Job cursed the day he was born wishing God wouldn't have brought light to his life. (read Job 3).

There's hope for a time as this; it's the Light that illuminates a life of pain, despair, worthlessness, and grief.

If this is your truth, then pray this prayer:

Abba Father, I give you this season in my life. I trust you with each and every minute though I don't feel like it nor know how. Your Word says joy comes in the morning; that is when the brightest light appears. Just like you did for Job, show me the wonder of your love. Deliver me from this darkness so that I may gladly tell of your deliverance during this time of year. Send your angels amongst me to support and love me; even if that is of human form. May they show understanding, compassion and a desire for every area of my life to be known. I thank you that you are a God that hears and most of all answers when a child calls home. In Jesus' wonderful name; Amen!

We are told to expose the darkness. There are situations that seem to not be right, but we might now expose them because they don't have anything to do with us personally. It's hard to do the right thing when you might stand out for it. But outfitted with the armor of God, you can do all things.

One of the enemy's greatest tactics is to keep people so busy doing so many things that there isn't time

for the most important thing of all -- JESUS. We need to make time, to spend time daily with Him and in His Word... make it a priority in our lives and everything else falls into place. I find that when I read what He has written for me, my day goes better, my attitude is in the right place, I'm filled with His Spirit! I'm not saying everything is always roses... there will be trials on this earth... but this place is not my HOME! Amen!

Try to simplify your life a bit to make room for Him. And as always, if you're not sure how....

SIMPLY ASK HIM!

He loves it when you call upon His name and longs to have a relationship with you!

Simplify your life today so you can receive the light and understanding He desires to give to you.

WOW! To even try to imagine being with Jesus and rejoicing in heaven with Him!!!

To get my little pea brain wrapped around a loving God that wants me with Him!!

God spared nothing in His search for you! He gathered the greatest search party that has ever been formed in order to find you. He sent His Son, His Spirit, and His angels after you. As they searched, He had his people pray. You will never fully know how deep, how thorough, and how costly His search was. You do not belong to Him today because of chance, or accident, or a stroke of fate or luck. You are His because He never gave up His search until He found you!

You've probably seen the picture above before.... but I look at the expression on Jesus face in this one and think.... He is so happy to have me in His life!!!

In the Bible there are several verses containing the words lamps and candle sticks. It's interesting that during our holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas; going into the darkest part of our season, is when most bring out those items in our present culture and society. In Exodus 35 it clearly talks about the gifts brought to the tabernacle but notice how several verses refer to.... "all whose hearts were willing". The willing part is the Light of God that has come to pass.

Definition of light: Something that makes vision possible

From the very beginning of time, light has been an important symbol and need to our Heavenly Father. In the beginning of creation, He couldn't be among the darkness; so He spoke light into existence. This is how the very first day of existence began; splitting light from the darkness and calling it Day and Night. The night couldn't even be completely dark as He desired there to be a lesser light. We are not to be in darkness.

We can speak light into our day as well, starting today; may it be a day of light and not darkness. It's a choice to see the light of the day God has given us.

Morning all! Hope your Halloween was frightfully good! We had another year of Trunk or Treat at our church... many show up with their cars 'n trucks... sometimes the vehicles are decorated and sometimes the people! We usually have over 200 mini ghouls, fairies, action heroes and critters parade through our parking lot with bags and parents in tow. The costumes are so adorable and everyone has such a great time.

New Prim Note Cards!

Since I can't sew right now... I thought I'd try my hand at something a little different and I love how they're turning out! I've made some blank note/thank you cards with vintage images.... and using those cool brown kraft envelopes.... and made up some matching stickers for the envelopes! I've put my first batch on ebay and will be adding more either there or my website real soon.

The healing begins.....

Well I haven't been the bestest blogger this year - a lot of stuff going on, but my hand issues have been the most debilitating. It's affected my work and my creating... but this too shall pass.

So.... I've had the hand surgery, it'll be two weeks tomorrow.... the healing feels slow to me, but maybe the Lord is working on my patience. ;o) I'll have four lovely scars... 2 for the carpal tunnel, 1 for the tendinitis, and 1 for something on the top of my hand called a ganglia. That last one was some kind of fluid on my hand restricting my range of motion, and it turned out to be the biggest cut at 1" long and so far seems to be giving me the most pain.

Yes I took pics and No I decided not to post them! LOL

Yes I did just one hand because, well, there are just some things I don't want my husband to help me with! :o)

I'm trying to be a good patient and not push it. I'm doing my little hand exercises and appreciating what it takes to lift a cup of coffee!

My plan was to take two weeks off work and now I'm wondering if that'll be enough! Yikes! My doc said it'll take a good 6 weeks for everything to start working right, but who can take off that long! Double Yikes! Will have to make that big 'ol decision by this weekend.... and of course, my family says.... don't rush it or you'll pay for it the rest of your life. Message received.

Gettin' old ain't fer sissies!

My husband has been so fabulous... doing dishes and laundry and such.... by the time I get real used to this queen treatment.... it'll be gone like the wind! That it's starting to bother me if there's a glass or two needing washing, I know I'm healing! hehehe ;o)

I have a creation sitting here looking at me.... so close to being done and yet... doubt it'll happen... takes long enough to type! So I am working on some other things that don't require the use of a needle, only a mouse... which can be a little challenging too....I hope to show them soon! Hope you like them!

In the meantime... it's one day at a time....trying to keep my sense of humor and getting to see my grandson a little bit more now that I can kinda sorta drive left handed to get there! haha! At least they aren't far away and no main roads! Shhhhh

So.... since it's such a beautiful fall day.... I'm heading outside to enjoy the changing leaves and not get upset as I stroll through my gardens, wishing I could do some playin' in the dirt! :O)

Punkin's and Halloween and GIVE AWAY!!!

Running from summer's merciless heat is finally over for another year and the cool temps and wonderful colors of Fall are upon us. Fall is finally here!

I came upon this great idea for pumpkin decorating and wanted to share it....

They took a regular 'ol punkin', painted it white and then did a decoupage treatment from the pages of a 1965 dictionary! I thought this was so cool! No mess no fuss! And the painting seals the punkin' and it'll last longer. More ideas like this came from COUNTRY LIVING online

I admit, with the kiddos all grown and gone, I haven't carved a pumpkin for awhile... but I might just have to try something like this!

Early Works and Website Sale!

Well I can't put it off any longer - it's time I take care of me. At the end of September I have to have hand surgery - carpal tunnel and tendinitis. There's also arthritis, but that's not happening now or maybe ever the way the doc described it! Yuk! So this is also why I haven't been creating as much as I used to. This will be my first surgery so I'm a little nervous, but this is supposed to fix me up and get rid of this horrendous pain, so I'm just doing a lot of praying on this one to get through it.

In the meantime, I'm getting a couple of things ready for my Early Works Shoppe updates for October 1st.... they'll be some extreme prim since it's a bit difficult right now doing eyes very well!! (and I'm not knocking those that do... our country and world is filled with so many beautiful places to see!) However, we do cruise, only on 4 wheels! This is our baby, a 1955 Chevy. We found each other about 2 years ago. She is a loving work in progress and every year she gets a little more done to her. That's part of the beauty of it. They say the fun is in the chase... or in doing a little as you can to make her yours!

Last year my husband concentrated on the safety issues of new brakes, motor, etc... all the stuff you can't see, but is oh so important!

This year our girl got wide whites and the front and back seats recovered. The covering on the seats prior... oh boy... if you know the name Herb Tarlick from WKRP in Cincinnati show years ago and how he dressed... you'll have an idea of what embarrassing fabric was on this poor girl!! She is much happier now with her new look and non-cloth seats - you can see her smile! The wide whites was my husband's big thing and the seats were mine! As we can, we'll get the side panels and other interior pieces redone as well. And someday down the road she'll get a paint job... but we love the look of her now.

I don't know what it is about her.... but we can come home from a hard day.... hop in our gal and it's like the worries and troubles of life just melt away and disappear with every mile. We don't usually have a particular destination in mind... sometimes it's just right... or left.... but I wouldn't trade this feeling for the world. With winter coming... she'll get tucked in, but you can be sure we'll be cruising if there happens to be a nice day!

As I mentioned -- Car Shows! Most of these old cars do not have air conditioning.... so the majority of car shows are Spring and Fall. What are they you ask? Basically a destination where people from all over the state or country (depending on which event it is)... cruise to parking lots, parks, even the local racetrack. We cruise there with family and friends in their old cars, we park, we set up the pop ups (cause these are held rain or shine), we look at all the old cars (most places are 1972 and older), we get ideas, we eat, we generally have a great time. Last Christmas I got a shirt for my husband that reads: Will Talk Cars With Anyone -- oh boy is this true!

Last weekend we went to the 'Ol Marais River Run in Ottawa, KS. We had some rain and some dry but it was still an amazing weekend! All these pics were taken there.

Here's the set up for the rain part! This is a view from the back of our little gathering.

One thing that is so awesome about this annual event.... is cruise night. They shut down Main Street and all the cars that want to, cruise up and down the street strutin' their stuff! It's like a 21st century American Graffiti! Many of the store fronts along this route look like they haven't been changed since the 50's or so! It's awesome! We cruise once then park on the street and watch all the cars til dark.

This year was the 25th anniversary of this event and they did an awesome fireworks display!

The people that spend all year organizing this event (The Over The Road Gang) and then running it are just the bestest ever! Everyone is so friendly and accommodating and it's all about the cars and the fun.

The grounds are filled with spectators, food booths, games, car booths (yes you can save some shipping and get yer parts here folks!), and loads of prizes!

These are the fantastic memories we're creating for our family!

Eric Update

I thank you all for your prayers for Eric. He is now undergoing skin graphs for his 3rd degree burns. Not sure when he will get out of the hospital.... he has a pretty long road ahead of him. He did get out of bed yesterday and stood for the first time since his accident, which is very encouraging. Thank you again my friends for keeping a complete stranger in your prayers - you are a blessing!

Emergency Prayers Please

I don't normally do this on my blog - but a guy my husband works with at the power company, took a 13,000 volt fire blast to his face and arms this afternoon. He's in the hospital and it's too soon to tell what will happen. His name is Eric.

One reason I'm writing this is because on Sept. 29 of this year, it will be 2 years since the same exact thing, same 13,000 volts, got my husband in the face. Any of you that have followed my blog that long might remember. So to say the least, my husband is pretty emotional and having flash backs about this. He knows exactly what Eric is and will be going through and we know what his family will go through.

The POWER OF PRAYER is awesome, my friends and I ask that you take just a minute to pray for God's healing hands to work in this situation. Thank you so much!

Just found out that Eric has 3rd degree burns on his face, neck, chest, arms. He took the blast full on in the face. Not trying to be graphic folks, this is such a dire situation.

Let Us Never Forget.....

On the eve of 9/11, I'm sure many of us are thinking back to where we were... what we were doing.... when we first heard or saw this horrible tragedy on American soil take place. I happened to be home, sipping coffee and watching Good Morning America. They broke in with the 1st plane after it hit, and as the cameras were on the Twin Towers... here came the 2nd. There was a brief moment when I thought... why are they replaying this... never thinking there could be 2.... and then there were more.

My youngest was just 10 and so... he doesn't remember anything of a pre-war world or hearing of the World Trade Center... and of the nearly 3000 people that lost their lives.

It always amazes me how people will flock to church's and "religion" when something like this happens.... and 10 years later... how many have kept that faith they professed so loudly in times of trouble? God is there for you in the midst of your sorrow and joy, every minute of every day!

And as hard as it is to remember a time like this... we must never forget. History teaches us the future... are we listening?

YUM Cake

I just had to share this simple recipe with you for one of the most delicious cakes I've ever had. I only managed to snap a pic after the piranha's around here scarfed half of it after dinner!

German Chocolate Yum Cake

1 pkg. German Chocolate Cake Mix

1 (14oz) can Sweetened Condensed Milk

12 oz. jar Caramel Ice Cream Topping

1 lg. Cool Whip container

1 bag crushed Heath bars ( i used TWO bags)

Prepare cake according to pkg directions.
Grease and flour, then bake in 9x13" pan.

When done and still warm, poke holes with fork all over cake.
Mix the milk and topping together and pour over cake.

Refrigerate until cold. Mix cool whip and Heath bars and spread on top.

Sprinkle extra Heath on top if you like.

I know it's been a sizzling summer, for what seems like an eternity already.... however, when my Hibiscus starts blooming.... to me, Official Summer has truly arrived!

This baby has been a faithful bloomer for a good ten years now. They have the dinner plate sized flowers, 8 1/2 - 9" across. Deep red monster blooms! Can't wait to see my little grandson's reaction to these. He's always wanting to smell the flowers... we're still working on the INHALE not EXHALE when he does! LOL

He's always a wonderful reminder, in my busy life, to stop and smell the flowers!

So that is my prayer for ya'll today .... stop and smell the flowers, enjoy the little things God has given us!

Fun in the Sun

We've been having a midwest heat wave that seems worse than I can recall from past summers. It could be me getting older -- but -- nah! ;o) The older I get the more I'm so thankful for working air conditioning!

I can remember when our kids were little, no air! I wonder how we made it sometimes, even though I of course, grew up without this modern convenience. Maybe because we were young, maybe because you do what you have to do to get by. Lots of sprinklers for the kids to run through and little wading pools to splash in... even tried one of those slip 'n slides one year - boy did my husband complain about the dead grass strip on that one!

There's no end in sight for this brutal heat wave until at least next Friday! So if you're dealing with this ugly beast... keep cool anyway you can and I'll be saying some prayers for ya.

So... there's this park near us and my daughter tells me they put in a Free little water park! We took my (recently 2 year old) grandson there the other day and oh boy - what a blast! Even gramma got wet! There is simply nothing sweeter in this world than the sound of your kids or grandkids laughter! It makes your heart lighter and you can't help but have a big 'ol goofy grin on your face!

My creations are down to a mild roar this summer and that's ok. Between some health issues I'm dealing with and just enjoying my family.... it's been refreshing and relaxing. Everyone needs to recharge those batteries!

So how are you keeping cool this year?

Patriots in the family

We all have them ... ancestors that in some way... fought in, helped or served in some kind of war/conflict or another... whether on the battlefield, your neighborhood or keeping the home fires burning. Most of the causes of war seemed to be freedom in some form or another. Our history is supposed to teach us the future, but sadly, I wonder how much we really learn and retain from the past.

With the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War this last April, it got me to thinking of some of my ancestors. I did extensive genealogy years ago and uncovered some amazing things. Even though I've had ancestors that fought in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, the Civil War, etc.... it was one ancestor in particular.... a certain thing that happened in 1863, that has had me thinking just how one instance can happen and poof.... the line ends right then and there... and I'd never be here writing this.

You see, during July of 1863, our country was still in the midst of the horrendous "Civil" War. One branch of my family was located in Kansas when William T. "Bloody" Bill Anderson and some 25 bushwackers of Quantrill's Raiders, came through here. One of the farms that Anderson ended up at was my ancestor's, Stephen Payne. (Stephen already had his two oldest sons enlisted in the Kansas Infantry and one in the Calvary).

His wife hid all the children under the floor and Stephen was shot and killed right on his property. He was 46. At the time, my great great grandpa, Alfred, was just under a year old. It was just one terrible event that was to change their lives forever and shake the community to its core.

It's amazing to read the story of that fateful day. Anderson and his guerrillas riding across the country side, killing, plundering, burning homes. And after the dead were laid to rest, how the community came together and one by one, rebuilt their neighbors homes, as they tried to rebuild their lives with such great losses.

There's so much more to the story, and I'm sure ya'll don't have time for everything... ;o) .... however, I was just thinking of this period in time as I was making my blackberry jam this morning and felt the need to write it down. Even though several lost their lives, they never found my great-great-grampa or any of the other children.... and because of that... I'm here! When you think how fragile life can be, it sure makes ya want to make every minute count.

Fireflies and Summertime!

My little grandson will be 2 next month.... and this week my daughter informed me that he just discovered FIREFLIES!
How enthralled and amazed this little man is by these glowing little flashes of light all around him! He hasn't had his "night light" in a mason jar of these tiny creatures yet... but someday I'm sure he will, just like his mama did when she was young.

Hearing this simple little statement at his latest discovery it really took me back. Back to the days when my kids were little... the hot summer days when they played outside all day... had to about drag them in for lunch... or maybe have a picnic under a shade tree... then right back out they'd go... inventing games, riding bikes, splashing in the cattle tank or running through a sprinkler, playing in the sand box with my ever dwindling supply of spoons from my silverware drawer... (yes, true story!).... and no time for something they'd never heard of yet - video games!

The warm summer nights where they played outside way past dark... flashlight tag... hide 'n seek... chasing each other... chasing fireflies. In my mind, I can still hear their laughter and giggles just being silly... just being kids.

The time has gotten away from me and they are grown and I'm the gramma now. But God's little miracles surround us every day and in every way. I don't ever want to be so "grown up" that I can't delight in these simple little things in life... or in memories.

I remember the little thrill as a child when I'd take all my Valentine cards to school, carefully filled out for all the kids in my class... and maybe a sucker or piece of gum attached if we could afford it.... mama always said if you do for one, you do for all! And days before the Big Event, the time we spent as a class creating a mailbox masterpiece from an old shoe box brought from home... decorated in a flurry of red, white and pink paper hearts and a mountain of Elmer's glue!

Maybe it was knowing that the day would be different and not much, if any, school work would be done that day... anticipating when the mom's would come to school with their fresh home baked goodies for our class party!

A New Year.....

- - - I'm a tad late in wishing ya'll a Happy New Year - - -

We've been a bit busy around here as my sweet mother in law went through a very long process of dying.

Alzheimer's can be a cruel beast, along with congestive heart failure and other things.

At least she was blessed to pass at home around her family.

She went to dance with Jesus at the tender age of 85, in the early morning hours of January 5th.

This was such an amazing woman... she had a kind of quiet strength. However as her boys tell it, she could wield a mean broom to shoo them out of her kitchen when they were young'uns!

And her Faith - if I could get halfway to where she was I'd be honored and truly blessed! I'm a work in progress! :o)

She raised four boys to be wonderful men of God, one of which, I'm proud to be married to for 25 years.

We will miss you!

When our kids were little, we'd go over to the inlaws on Christmas Eve. On the way home, we'd see a star or light in the sky and point it out... "Oh No.... Is that Santa"! We better get you guys home and right in bed so he'll come! The excitement and squeals from the backseat are still such a wonderful snapshot memory!

It's Been A Year....

A year ago today I got a call... one of those calls I've dreaded for years and thank God... never received... until this day. The call informed me that my husband had been in an accident at work. That he was being taken by ambulance to the hospital and I needed to get there pretty quick.

You see, he's an electrical lineman. That means dealing with the wires, cables, transformers, etc., that keep your lights turned on. Most people haven't a clue what kind of voltage these guys work with. On this particular day, while starting to work on a transformer that he was told was off, and showed all signs of being off... it blew.

It blew fire.

It blew fire in his face.

13,200 volts!

To give you a comparison, there's 120 volts when you turn on a light switch.

God was watching over him that day and spared his life. And many good things came from it like better safety measures at work, more checks and balances, fireproof outfits, etc.. and a lot more training for all. Now, my husband isn't a rookie at this profession. He's been doing it almost 20 years... but stuff happens.

So tonight we're having a celebratory dinner in his honor... to celebrate that he's still here with us, to laugh, joke and drive us all crazy at times! LOL

And this December, I'll still have the love of my life with me to celebrate 25 years of marriage.

We don't take the days for granted like we used to... don't you either! :o)

WSOAPP Grand Opening

Whew! What a day! Friday I canned 29 pints of salsa and today 35 pints! Again I say, WHEW! And yep, we all love salsa around here. ;o)

I wanted to mention that Sunday Aug. 1 is the grand opening for WSOAPP.org!
